QR Fleet: IMU
Interurban Multiple Unit

Following on from QR's introduction of the SMUs into the Brisbane Suburban area, the Interurban Multiple units have been specifically aimed toward a new commuter market. With the opening of the Gold Coast Railway in early 1996, these commuter trains provided QR Citytrain with the opportunity to service this ever-expanding community.

As with the EMUs and the SMUs, these vehicles are fully air conditioned, with window tinting and woollen carpets. To distinguish these trains as being different from existing trains, QR Citytrain customers to the Airport, Gold and Sunshine Coasts will notice the mobility impaired access toilet, upgraded seating, the luggage racks and storage spaces, and the visual indicator signs linked with the digital Voice Announcement System. Hearing impaired commuters are able to make use of the hearing aid loop to hear public address announcements.

Citytrain customers can also rest easy in the knowledge that a full video surveillance and emergency communication system has been fitted.

Train drivers have access to full computerised information about the performance of the train, while other computers go about their tasks of controlling the GTO (gate turn-off) thyristor three phase traction convertor and three phase electric traction motors.

The stainless steel bodied trains carry on the successful use of this material for QR's existing EMUs, ICEs and SMUs. Walkers Limited of Maryborough, Queensland have again utilised their design and manufacturing talents to produce a train which is both pleasing to the eye externally as well as internally. Walkers' joint venture partner, ABB Transportation Australia was responsible for the bodyshell, bogie and electrical design, with ABB Transportation Systems of Switzerland being sub-contracted to provide the traction, auxiliary and computer control systems.
